European Innovation Partnership: Launch of the Smart Cities and Communities Call for Proposals

With the launch of the European Innovation Partnership, the European Commission has opened a new Call for Proposals for Smart Cities and Communities, with an increased budget targeting the three key sectors of transport, energy and ICT.

On 10 July, the European Commission announced the earmarking of €365 million a year to support technology innovations aimed at increasing the efficiency of cities. The new Call for Proposals will support joint projects from cities and industries integrating the three key aspects of energy, ICT and transport in an effort to improve Europe’s urban environments.

To be deemed eligible for co-financing, projects could fall in the following categories:

  • Smart buildings and neighbourhoods
  • Smart supply and demand services
  • Urban mobility
  • Smart and sustainable digital infrastructure

The Call will be open to industry-led consortia with partners coming from three Member States and/or Associated Countries and including at least two city representatives.

The Call for Proposals, which falls under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7), will support projects starting in 2013.

The deadline to receive application is 4 December 2012.
